Roberto Castaldi

Roberto Castaldi is Associate Professor of Political Philosophy and director of the Research Centre on multi-level integration and governance processes at eCampus University. For the Centre of Studies on Federalism (CSF) of Turin he is editor of the Bibliographical Bullettin on Federalism and co-editor of Perspectives on Federalism. He is one of the founders and Director of Researches of the International Centre for European and Global Governance (CesUE), spin-off of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna.

Roberto obtained the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) at the United World College of the Adriatic, then studied at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa and at the University of Pisa, where he graduated in Political Sciences. He then got a Master of Arts in European Studies at the Graduate School of European and International Studies at the University of Reading (UK), and a PhD at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa, with a Dissertation in English on "A contribution to a theory of international systems change".

Roberto’s research focuses on the analytical aspect of federalism. Starting from some hints in Albertini’s writings he developed an interdisciplinary theoretical framework combining critically revised versions of political realism (highlighting a federalist realist tradition from Hamilton to Seeley and Dehio), historical materialism (revised mainly through the works of K. Polanyi), and social constructivism, with particular reference to the theory of ideology (exploiting mainly Ricoeur and Albertini). These revisions were required to analyse the interaction and interdependent development of the three fundamental sectors of analysis according to Gellner: political power and coercion, material production and economy, culture and political legitimacy. He used this theoretical framework to study international systems changes (2002). He then found in Elias' works a complementary perspective, with crucial elements and methodological aspects to be included in the framework (2008). From a methodological point of view also building on Elias’ works Roberto focus on the interaction between different levels and sectors of analysis and its implications on the theoretical framework, also exploiting insights from Beck’s criticism of methodological nationalism and proposal of methodological cosmopolitanism. The second main strand of Roberto’s research concerns federalism and European integration. He wants to exploit Elias’ works and figurational sociology to study European integration, from a long-term figurational perspective.
